The first round of headliners for the TD Victoria International Jazz Festival has been announced, and they include a member of Herbie Hancock’s band, a retro-soul act from Houston, Texas, a 15-year-old piano prodigy, and several Grammy and Juno Award winners.

The shows at the Royal Theatre and McPherson Playhouse are part of the Marquee Series at the festival, which runs June 22 until July 1.

Performances at the McPherson Playhouse include Raul Midón, Herbie Hancock bandmate Lionel Loueke and Juno Award winner Laila Biali (June 21), Texas six-piece the Suffers with Victoria’s Aaron Scoones (June 23), and Chicago’s Patricia Barber Trio with Victoria’s Marc Atkinson Trio (June 24).

Concerts at the Royal Theatre include Grammy nominee Joey Alexander — who will play on the day of his 16th birthday (June 25) with Victoria’s Quinn Bachand — and British multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier (June 28).

Tickets for the Marquee Series shows go on sale March 22 through the Royal McPherson box office (250-386-6121) or online at rmts.bc.ca.

Other acts booked to appear at the festival include Davina and the Vagabonds, Donny McCaslin, Marquis Hill Blacktet, Naughty Professor and Alex Pangman. More performers will be announced in coming weeks. For more information, visit jazzvictoria.ca.
