Listen to a concert of music inspired by the sea at Sea and Song, by the University of Victoria Wind Symphony with guests the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, Friday at the Farquhar auditorium at the University of Victoria.

This is the seventh year of the musical collaboration, jointly directed by Steven Capaldo and Lt. (N) Catherine Norris.

Jesse Johnson, winner of the 2019 UVic Wind Symphony Concerto Competition, will take centre stage to play Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble.

Other works on the program include Franco Cesarini’s Blue Horizons, The Sun Paints Rainbows Over the Vast Waves by David Bedford, Alex Shapiro’s electroacoustic work Liquid Compass and the classic Claude T. Smith fantasy Eternal Father, Strong to Save, based on the traditional British mariner’s hymn of the same name.

Celebrating its 80th anniversary, the Naden Band is one of six regular force military bands of the Canadian Forces and serves as the official musical unit of the Canadian Forces Maritime Forces Pacific Command.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Naden Band’s Scholarship in Music Performance, awarded annually to second- and third-year UVic School of Music students who demonstrate excellence in brass, woodwind and percussion performance.

Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and UVic alumni. The concert runs 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at The Farquhar at the University of Victoria. For tickets, go to uvic.ca/farquahar. More details can be found here.
