An arts and music award launched by B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor will honour individuals, groups or organizations who have enhanced arts and culture within their communities with monetary gifts valued between $5,000 and $15,000.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Arts and Music Awards, launched Wednesday by the office of Lt.-Gov. Janet Austin, with support from the Government House Foundation, recognize exceptional leaders in the fields of visual arts, music or performance.

The awards, part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the Queen, are designed to celebrate nominees in categories whose work strengthens cross-cultural concepts of engagement, inclusiveness and commitment.

“We turn to music and the arts in challenging times to replenish our sense of joy, and inspire, elevate and move our spirits,” Austin said in a statement.

“Now, more than ever, we must value, nurture, and support the brightest artists and musicians among us. I am honoured to have the opportunity to do so with the launch of the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts and Music Awards.”

B.C.-born or -based participants are eligible for up to 20 individual awards valued up to $5,000 each and between four and five organizational awards of up to $15,000 apiece. Nominations will be open until May 13, 2022.

The selection committee of visual arts, music and performing arts leaders includes Gary Karr, George Harris, Jacques Lemay, Geraldine Hinton, Carleen Thomas, Howard Jang and Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson.
