An assault with a broken beer bottle outside a Nanaimo pub left one man with a life-threatening gash to the neck and another cut and unconscious.

Nanaimo RCMP responded to an altercation at the Old City Pub on Skinner Street just before midnight on Saturday.

When they arrived, officers found two injured men at the scene: a 26-year-old with a severe cut to his neck from a broken bottle and a 32-year-old who had cuts and was unconscious.

Both men were taken to Nanaimo General Regional Hospital.

“The injuries inflicted by the broken bottle were horrendous,” said Const. Gary O’Brien. “If not for emergency medical treatment provided by attending paramedics, and later by emergency-room physicians, these injuries could have been fatal.”

The suspect fled before police arrived.

Gabriola Island RCMP arrested Eli Williams, 22, a few days after the incident.

Williams has been placed in police custody and charged with assault, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault, said O’Brien.

O’Brien said there were several witnesses and police are asking anyone who was there to contact the Nanaimo police bike unit at 250-754-2345.
