Mary Queen of Scots (Cineplex Odeon Victoria, Star) — Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan), who was the Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18. Defying pressure to remarry, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). 14A

The Mule (Capitol 6, SilverCity) — A 90-year-old horticulturist and Second World War veteran is caught transporting $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel. With Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper and Taissa Farmiga. 14A

On the Basis of Sex (Capitol 6, Landmark Cinemas University Heights, Star) — The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights and what she had to overcome in order to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. With Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer and Justin Theroux. PG

Ralph Breaks the Internet (Cineplex Odeon Westshore) — The reluctant video-game villain and his pal, Vanellope von Schweetz, leave the arcade and head online in this computer-animated sequel to the 2012 hit. With the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman and Gal Gadot. G

Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Capitol 6, Cineplex Odeon Westshore, SilverCity) — A Brooklyn teen dons a mask and joins forces with arachnid-like superheroes from other dimensions in this animated tale. With voices by Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson and Hailee Steinfeld. PG

Vice (Cineplex Odeon Victoria, SilverCity) — While serving as the CEO of a multinational corporation, former secretary of defence Dick Cheney (Christian Bale) is approached by presidential candidate George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell) and is asked to head the search committee to appoint his vice-president. Shortly later, Cheney is offered the candidacy himself and agrees, but only if his duties can be expanded to include overseeing the military and foreign policy. 14A
