Movies are coming back to IMAX Victoria. The Royal B.C.Museum has announced it will reopen the large-screen theatre on Sept. 3.
The 369-seat theatre, which is inside the museum at 775 Belleville St., has been closed since November due to concerns over COVID-19. The museum said it will automatically extend the term of all current IMAX annual passes to March 31, 2022 to provide value to annual passholders — those most affected by the drop in programming.
“We know film buffs, especially IMAX Annual Passholders, will be thrilled by this news, and we thank them for their patience and loyalty,” Erika Stenson, acting vice-president of museum operations, said in a statement.
The museum purchased IMAX Victoria theatre for $3.8 million in September from Destination Cinema Inc., the U.S. company that opened the big-screen theatre in 1998 and ran it independently of the museum. Since the change in ownership, the theatre has undergone numerous changes, from sporadic closures due to the pandemic to the departure of key staff.
The Royal B.C. Museum said it will provides updates about upcoming film schedules in the coming weeks.
