Why: A glitzy joint venture by AIDS Vancouver Island, Chinatown Events and the Victoria Film Festival is turning the Copper Owl into a decadent dance party this weekend. The fundraiser for AVI is inspired by event producer Susanne Bartsch — whose Love Balls were a highlight of the 1980s club scene in New York — with prizes for best costume. Be sure to catch the documentary on Bartsch (Susanne Bartsch: On Top) at the Odeon on Thursday as part of the Victoria Film Festival.

What: Three Daves Do the Songs of Hank Williams

Why: David Chenery, David P. Smith and Dave Harris have joined up for a pair of tributes to the late, great Hank Williams this weekend. The three local mainstays will take two stabs at the Hillbilly Shakespeare’s illustrious songbook, beginning with a show Friday in Nanaimo at The White Room. The three friends and collaborators have played together sporadically, but rehearsals have been sounding strong heading into their Victoria performance on Saturday. “These are not reproductions of the music,” Smith said. “They are vital, current and honest interpretations, true to the spirit and emotion of Hank.” Add this to your calendars, country fans.

What: History of Jazz Concert Series
Where: Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St.
When: Saturday, Feb. 10, 2 p.m. (doors at 1)
Tickets: $20
Why: The first entry in the History of Jazz series at Hermann’s Jazz Club will take listeners on a cruise up the Mississippi River for an afternoon of New Orleans and Dixieland jazz. Everything from Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong to Ethel Waters and Bessie Smith will be handled by a remarkable house band that includes Donnie Clark (cornet/trumpet), Bob Cadwallader (trombone), Al Pease (clarinet/soprano sax), Toni Blodgett (piano), Joey Smith (bass), Don Leppard (drums) and Maureen Washington (vocals). The next instalment in the series isn’t due until May, so you’ll want to get your jazz fix on Saturday before the long wait.
