They’re all around us — folks who march to the beat of a different drummer and are regarded as being far from what we define as “normal.” But what is normal anyway?

Inspired by Scottish psychotherapist Robert Weeks’s study suggesting eccentrics are happier, are healthier and live longer than most of us, Oscar-winning Canadian filmmaker John Zaritsky has crafted an uplifting portrait of seven endearing non-conformists.

While their stories aren’t slickly interspersed, Zaritsky (Leave Them Laughing) weaves a fascinating, non-judgmental tapestry that both celebrates his subjects’ spirit and sheds light on what makes them tick. The film’s surprisingly articulate oddballs include Daniel Suelo, a hermit who lives without money in caves in Utah; John Ward, a delightfully quirky British inventor; and Laura-Kay Prophet, Vancouver’s fortune-telling “duck lady,” who wanders the city’s east side with her yellow-feathered sidekicks.
