Why: Salt Spring Island folk favourite Valdy will change gears this weekend and join forces with the Victoria Jazz Orchestra, an unusual tack for the Juno-award winner. His first collaboration with bandleader/saxophonist Monik Nordine and her fellow musicians will include updated renditions of his well-known hits, along with a number of jazz standards.

Why: Jazz singer Tia Brazda will perform two shows on Vancouver Island this week, beginning with her return to Hermann’s Jazz Club tonight. The B.C. native, who grew up in New Westminster but now lives in Toronto, has won style points for her throwback sound, a cross between Billie Holiday and Amy Winehouse. Brazda’s new album, Daydream, debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes jazz chart in Canada and has positioned her as one of the genre’s leading lights. Brazda also plays Char’s Landing in Port Alberni on Friday.

The popular character played by Patrick Roach will offer a mix of stand-up comedy and cheeseburgers at this showcase. Consider this the ultimate ingredient for an epic Saturday night.
