Multi-instrumentalist Richard Moody's performance at Hermann's Jazz Club on Thursday is one of the top picks this weekend. SOUNDRICH RECORDS

RICHARD MOODY PLAYS STEPHANE GRAPPELLI

Where: Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St., Victoria

When: Thursday, Aug. 25, 7 p.m. (doors at 5:30)

Tickets: $25 from hermannsjazz.com

Why: Victoria has its share of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli disciples, but violinist Richard Moody definitely stands out from the gypsy jazz pack. The play-everything performer has a resumé that includes stints with everyone from the Wailin’ Jennys and the Bills to Jane Siberry and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, but he’s equally impressive as a bandleader. Look for him to do some serious swinging tonight with bandmates Ashley Wey (piano) and Oliver Swain (bass) by his side.

NAUTICAL DISASTER

Where: Esquimalt Lagoon, Colwood

When: Saturday, Aug. 27, 5 p.m.

Admission: Free

Why: This popular tribute to the Tragically Hip returns Saturday to the beach stage at Esquimalt Lagoon, site of the band’s largest show to date. The group, which takes its moniker from the Tragically Hip song of the same name, drew 1,000 people to the lagoon for a beachside set on July 23 as part of a summer series staged by the City of Colwood. They have been asked to return to close out the summer series this weekend, so expect another rip-roaring afternoon of songs from the Can-rock canon. Come for the view, stay for the party.

CAVITY 10 YEAR PARTY

Where: Carlton Performing Arts Hub, 900 Carlton Terr., Esquimalt

When: Friday, Aug. 26, 7 p.m.

Tickets: $20 from Cavity Curiosity Shop (2514 Douglas St.) or cavitycuriosityshop.ca

Why: Has it really been a 10-year run for the little shop that could? Cavity Curiosity Shop is an unlikely but welcome retail success story, given that it specializes in rare and underground books and music. Metal music of every stripe has found a home at Cavity, so it makes sense that a birthday party celebrating 10 years of success is led by hard-chargers Confusion Master and Deconsecration. Esquimalt will certainly be rocking on this night.
