MUSIC

What: Canadian Fiddle Celebration
Where: Charlie White Theatre in the Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney
When: Saturday, Oct. 5, 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7)
Tickets: $30 from tickets.marywinspear.ca or the Mary Winspear box office
Why: Three fiddlers with unique backgrounds are on stage Saturday at Sidney’s Charlie White Theatre for the Canadian Fiddle Celebration. The three headliners — Nova Scotia’s Gordon Stobbe, Saskatchewan’s JJ Guy and Sidney’s Nellie Quinn — top a program that also includes bassist Trish Horrocks and pianist Geoff Horrocks from Nanaimo, and guitarist Charlie Gannon from Victoria. Quinn, who is helping to organize the event, heads up the Victoria Folk ’N Fiddle Festival, so expect top-quality tunes.

THEATRE

What: Play On!
Where: St. Luke’s Church Hall, 3821 Cedar Hill Cross Rd.
When: Oct. 9-20
Tickets: $16 from eventbrite.ca or in person at The Papery (669 Fort St.)
Why: The season opener for one of the longest-running community theatres in the province should be a good one. St. Luke’s Players enter their 71st year of operation with Play On!, a play-within-a-play gem from writer Rick Abbott, who fashions his farce around the (often slapstick) backstage happenings of a community theatre group. The end result is something akin to Noises Off, the iconic British farce. Both matinées and evening performances are offered through Oct. 20 at the quaint church in the Cedar Hill area.

BOOKS

What: Michael Christie’s Greenwood
Where: Munro’s Books, 1108 Government St.
When: Tuesday, Oct. 8, 7 p.m. (doors 6:30)
Admission: Free
Why: A new literary star in the making is on our midst, as evidenced by Michael Christie’s recent Giller Prize longlist nomination — the second of his short career — for Greenwood. The futuristic, time-shifting tale with an environmental bent has been getting rave reviews since its Sept. 24 release. The beautifully written tale with roots off the coast of British Columbia has the makings of a classic. The writer, who recently moved from Galiano Island to Victoria, will be reading from the book Tuesday at Munro’s. Don’t miss it.
