MUSIC

What: A Musical Summer at Christ Church Cathedral
Where: Christ Church Cathedral, 930 Burdett Ave.
When: Saturday, Aug. 7
Tickets: eventbrite.ca

Why: A busy month of activity featuring a wide range of collaborators at Christ Church Cathedral continues Saturday with programs featuring Pacific Baroque, Early Music Vancouver, members of the Victoria Symphony and various in-house cathedral musicians. A full day of in-person events on Saturday — Bach’s Sixth Suite for solo cello (11 a.m.), Mozart’s Oboe Quartet and Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet (4 p.m.), and 17th Century French music for the viola da gamba (7:30 p.m.) — leads into yet more programming on Aug. 11, the first of eight days in the Victoria Summer Music Festival. The lineup of activity over the next 12 days includes appearances by everyone from cellists Elinor Frey and Brian Yoon to pianists Jane Coop, Arthur Rowe, and Eric Milnes. An embarrassment of riches.

ART

What: On Growing, Rocks
Where: The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective, 2516 Douglas St.
When: Thursday, Aug. 5, 7 p.m.
Admission: Free (register at eventbrite.ca)

Why: An opening reception for a new exhibit showcasing the work of artists Sylvie Ringer and Jenni Schine is set for the Fifty Fifty Arts Collective on Thursday. Sound artist Schine and visual artist Ringer combined their talents for On Growing, Rocks, which explores the connections between place and memory, epigenetics and fertility, and conscious and subconscious experiences. Field recordings add an aural component to the exhibit, which runs Aug. 6-31 at the Douglas Street venue and includes everything from free workshops to Q&A sessions with the artists.

THEATRE

What: Molecular Landscapes
Where: Various locations, including Saxe Point and Beacon Hill Park
When: Thursday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 8
Admission: By donation

Why: A series of site-responsive performances by Victoria’s Impulse Theatre will occupy greenspace across the Vancouver Island area through the weekend, beginning with performances today at Saxe Point Park. Events which are part of Molecular Landscapes incorporate into their programming the environments in which they are held, which makes for a world of possibilities; Witty’s Lagoon, Beacon Hill Park, and Salt Spring Island — for a series of “guerilla” pop-up performances — are in play this weekend. For information regarding performance locations, visit impulsetheatre.ca/molecularlandscapes.
