Don’t worry, McFerrin’s here

Tickets are becoming scarce for Bobby McFerrin’s exclusive appearance at The Port Theatre tonight (Feb. 15), the only Vancouver Island date by the Don’t Worry Be Happy singer on his current tour of North America.

Bobby McFerrin & Gimme5: Circlesongs is the latest project from the celebrated New Yorker. Audience members are invited to join McFerrin and his four singers during their a capella-heavy performances. During his late-1980s, early-’90s peak, McFerrin won 10 Grammy Awards in an eight-year period in both the jazz and pop categories, including a win for song of the year in 1989 for Don’t Worry, Be Happy.

Tickets for the concert are $79 through tickets.porttheatre.com or by phone at 250-754-8550. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.

Grunge featured in tribute night

Fans of Seattle heavyweights Nirvana and Alice in Chains can enjoy the music of the late great grunge gods at the V-Lounge on Saturday Feb. 16.

Facelift (Alice in Chains) and C.R.W. (Nirvana) will be joined on the tribute triple bill by Colossus, a spot-on spin through the catalogue of underground Maryland rockers Clutch. Colossus opens the night at 9:30 p.m., followed by C.R.W. (10:45 p.m.) and Facelift (12 a.m.).

Tickets are $20 at universe.com. V-Lounge is located in the Red Lion Inn & Suites complex at 3366 Douglas St.

Bands honour New Orleans

Members of local acts Impulse Response, The New Groovement and The HiFi, among others, will join forces for the third time to pay musical tribute to the rich musical tapestry of the Crescent City.

Back to New Orleans, which is set for Hermann’s Jazz Club tonight (Feb. 15), is led by the talents of saxophonist Jonnie Bridgman and singer Shanna Dance. Thomas Kinzel (piano), Louis Rudner (bass), Mike Broadley (trumpet), Alexander Ferguson (vocals) and Damian Graham (drums) round out the New Orleans-style brass band.

The music of Louisiana’s famous soul and funk proponents — from Kermit Ruffins and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to The Meters, Dr. John and Trombone Shorty — will fill the setlist for this raucous event. Showtime is 8 p.m.

Tickets are $18 through eventbrite.com or $20 at the door. Prizes will be given to the best Mardi Gras costumes.
