Civic elections: Incumbents flourish in cities across British Columbia

For the most part, Saturday’s municipal elections were good news for incumbent mayors in cities around B.C. Incumbents were re-elected in Kelowna, Prince George, Williams Lake and Kamloops.

For the most part, Saturday’s municipal elections were good news for incumbent mayors in cities around B.C.

Incumbents were re-elected in Kelowna, Prince George, Williams Lake and Kamloops.

A showdown in Prince George between incumbent mayor Lyn Hall and Willy Ens went to Hall, who won with 11,702 votes. Hall picked up 88.8 per cent of the 13,184 votes cast.

Kamloops voters re-elected Ken Christian with 17,328 votes, easily winning over William Turnbull’s 2,666 votes. Kamloops had a 30 per cent voter turnout.

A six-way race for the mayor’s office in Penticton went to John Vassilaki.

Not all incumbents won.

Former firefighter Mike Hurley unseated five-term Mayor Derek Corrigan in Burnaby.

In Surrey, former mayor Doug McCallum was successful in his bid at a comeback to replace Linda Heppner in Surrey.
