The boat launch and parking lot at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody, as well as several other parking areas at civic facilities, will be closed indefinitely after midnight Thursday.

Boaters and visitors planning to drive to Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park to enjoy the sunshine forecast for the Easter weekend are out of luck.

The city is closing the park’s boat launch and parking lot, as well as parking areas at several other facilities like the Old Mill Boathouse, the Station Museum, the civic centre complex and Old Orchard park. The closures are effective midnight tonight and will last indefinitely.

The parks, and trails within them, will remain open.

Port Moody Mayor Rob Vagramov said the move is to discourage visitors travelling to the various parks and facilities, creating crowding problems when people should be staying apart.

“Our region and province is moving towards a ‘locals only’ approach for parks and recreation, and the city of Port Moody is acting accordingly,” he said, adding city council passed a resolution at its meeting Tuesday that calls for the provincial government to issue an order mandating physical distancing so it can be enforced.
