Two young New Westminster residents have created a colourful tribute to health-care workers and other essential service workers.

Nora Lalji and Hudson Hayward started a neighbourhood project on Kwantlen Court to send a larger-than-life message to those workers who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 battle.

The huge word Thank You appears in colourfully decorated chalk art on the cul-de-sac.

The project was inspired by a class assignment by Nora’s Grade 2 teacher at Richard McBride Elementary School, Ms. Kamagianis. The teacher asked her students to create a poster of gratitude for health-care workers or other essential service workers.

Which Nora did – and then the idea inspired friends on the cul-de-sac (including moms) to pitch in and do something bigger for the community.

Nora and neighbour Hudson Hayward, age 3.5 (who attends Kids & Company daycare), took on the chalk art project with help from their families.

“The letters were large enough that we could colour and be socially distant enough to work together,” wrote mom Lara Hayward in an email to the Record.

The result is currently glowing under the cherry blossoms on the small cul-de-sac off Richmond Street.
