Malone rose to prominence for his part in the Newfoundland-focused series from the late 1980s and early 1990s, but has also had a long history of activism.

Following the 1993 AIDS-related death of his Codco co-star, Tommy Sexton, Malone worked to destigmatize the disease and to raise awareness to the needs of people living with HIV.

Malone has also recently been a motivational speaker on several issues including AIDS, globalization and the environment.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said in a statement today she was a fan of his work and of his dedication to activism.

"He has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the health care issues facing persons living with HIV-AIDS," May said. "He also campaigned successfully to stop the privatization of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

"Greg will be a wonderful standard bearer for the Greens in Newfoundland, Labrador and Canada."
