Just how important are the right fashion accessories?

We asked fashion expert Nancy Gattey of Port Coquitlam’s Creekside Fashions for some advice.

“I really think that accessories are the icing on the cake,” she says. “They can make a basic outfit transform into something very special.”

Gattey suggests that if you’re on a budget, it’s a good idea to invest in some accessories because they can enable you to get a lot more mileage out of your wardrobe and create different looks just by adding a few different items.

For instance, if you’ve worn a little black dress to work you can go from day to evening in seconds. “Just by taking off thejacket and adding a nice pop of colour, a red clutch and some heels, you’re ready to go out for the evening.”

Today Gattey is wearing dark-wash skinny jeans, a grey T-shirt with a print and a grey casual blazer, which is pretty basic - on its own. Once she adds a beautiful scarf with pale blue and off-whites, and layers it with lustrous pearls in grey shades and slip-on black sneakers, her whole outfit come to life. “It just sort of gives it a much more polishedlook,” she says.

Of course with accessories, like anything in life, you must know where to draw the line.

“You have to find the right balance,” Gattey warns. “Don’t overdo it. Just pick a few statement items that will really make your outfit come alive.”

While seasonal colours and styles come and go, Gattey says fashion accessories - from jewelry and handbags to shoes and scarves - will always be the key element to putting together a memorable outfit for any occasion.
