Driving the play up the ice, Vancouver Northeast Chiefs blueliner Owen Philps looks for his next move during last week’s B.C. Major Midget Hockey League game against the North Island Silvertips. The Burnaby-based Chiefs collected their first two wins of the season and host the Thompson Blazers this week at Burnaby’s 8-Rinks.

They didn’t score first, but the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs made sure to score last in their two-game set last week against the North Island Silvertips.

The Burnaby-based Chiefs out-lasted the visiting Silvertips with 4-3 and 8-3 victories, improving to 2-2 in early season action in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League.

Sunday saw the squad erase a 2-1 hole with goals by Daniel Juca and Luke Roberts a minute apart late in the first period, leading to a healthy 8-3 decision. Burnaby got two goals each from Burnaby’s Jaden Christian Uy and Maple Ridge’s Jack Foster, closing out with three powerplay tallies.

Also scoring were Luke Roberts and Burnaby players Dante Berrettoni and Kaidan Johnson.

It came a day after the hosts rallied in a see-saw affair where Port Moody’s Christian Lowe netted the game winner with just 1:17 to play.

The Silvertips rolled out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, before the Chiefs pulled even on markers from Juca and Dylan Smail. Tanner Terness gave the home team it’s first lead of the game, but North Island replied just four minutes later to tie it, setting up Lowe’s heroics. Both Juca and Terness are Burnaby products.

The twin wins bumped the Chiefs into a tie for fourth place with the South Island Royals, at 2-2-0-0.

This weekend they host the visiting 1-3-0-0 Thompson Blazers, 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, both games at Burnaby 8-Rinks.
