A Richmond French patisserie’s 10th anniversary celebration is ending as quickly as it started.

L’Opera Patisserie, on Minoru Boulevard close to Westminster Highway, announced it will be closing down this month - but not because of COVID-19.

Janice Marta, co-owner and manager of the patisserie, said the decision to close just happened to be while they were temporarily shut down during the pandemic restrictions.

The main reason they decided to close was to let Marta’s mom retire and do “what she wants to do.”

“The shop belongs to me and my mother and because we work long and grueling hours, she has wanted to retire for a while now,” said Marta, adding that her mother has been with her since the beginning.

“It’s also been on my mind to kind of move on and relocate to a better place, somewhere maybe with better parking.”

Marta told the Richmond News that the store has received an “overwhelming” amount of support since announcing their closure that their online order forms have “exploded” with at least 1,000 croissant orders for this weekend.

“We feel so humbled and so touched, and we feel very blessed to have so many people come out and support us like that.”

While the decision, said Marta, was difficult to make, she is looking forward to closing this chapter of L’Opera Patisserie and looking forward to opening another one.

She has been looking at commissary kitchens, a shared kitchen for rent, in downtown Vancouver and is also interested in doing wholesale to sell baked goods at other stores.

L’Opera Patisserie’s last day will be Aug. 16.
