Coquitlam’s Matteo Polisi scored the only goal to give his Simon Fraser University Clan men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Northwest Nazarene University, in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference match, Thursday in Nampa, Idaho.
The goal, in the game’s 21st minute, was Polisi’s sixth of the season, tops for the Clan and second in the GNAC.
SFU fired 11 shots at the NNU goal, while Clan keeper Aidan Bain, who’s from Port Coquitlam, made four saves to earn his second clean sheet of the season.
Earlier, Bain was named to the GNAC’s All-Academic team. The junior has maintained a 3.61 grade point average while topping the conference with a 1,12 goals against average. Teammates Lucas McIlveen and Bjorn Borren were also recognized.
The Clan visit Montana State Billings on Saturday.
Buono scores first goal
Coquitlam’s Kiara Buono scored her first collegiate goal Thursday, but it wasn’t enough as her SFU Clan women’s soccer team lost 3-2 to Central Washington.
Buono scored in the 24th minute when she converted a pass from fellow freshman Jenieva Musico. The goal put the Clan up 2-0.
Earlier, it was Buono who set up Musico for the team’s first goal.
But the Wildcats came back with two goals of their own before halftime then scored the game-winner in the 65th minute.
SFU plays Western Washington University in Bellingham on Saturday.
