New Westminster-born Mike Mason is final-bound.

The 33-year-old athlete qualified for his first-ever high jump final by clearing 2.29 metres at the IAAF World Athletic championships in Qatar on Tuesday.

By finishing sixth overall among 12 competitors, Mason earned a berth into Friday's finals. It is his fourth world championship meet. At the 2017 worlds, Mason cleared 2.26m on his first attempt, but was unable to clear the 2.29m height in the remaining three tries.

Momentum has been growing for the Nanoose Bay native. In April he posted a then-world-leading 2.31m jump at the Sam Adams Invitational, breaking Canadian Derek Drouin's record of 2.28, set in 2017. He also competed at the Harry Jerome Invitational in June, and has strung together his best season health-wise.

A former world junior champion, in 2004, Mason has competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
