The Royal City Curling Club and Golden Ears Winter Club’s Thomas Reed rink appears to have locked up one of the final berths to the B.C. junior men’s curling championships, which are slated for Dec. 28 to Jan. 2 in Victoria.

The Reed rink, which includes third Kazune Eugene Fei, second Adam Fenton and lead Matthew Fenton, and coached by RCCC’s Fuji Miki, was guaranteed a spot after one team dropped out of this week’s scheduled junior men's open playdown in Kelowna. Joining them will be Kamloops Colorado Marr rink.

Reed fell short of qualifying at last week’s Lower Mainland playdowns, falling 9-8 to Langley’s Ballard rink in the A event, then 8-3 to the Richmond-Vancouver-Port Moody team skipped by Johnson Tao.

Already going to Victoria is New West’s Team Sato.

The Royal City rink, that includes skip Hayato Sato, third Matthew McCrady, second Joshua Miki and lead Jacob Umbach, earned its spot by winning the B.C. Junior Curling Tour’s men’s side.

On the junior women’s side, the Royal City-Tunnel Town team skipped by Jensen Taylor, with third Meredith Cole, second Keira McCoy and lead Chelsea Taylor, is among the seven teams already lined up for the jr. women’s event.

Falling short after losing 10-6 in the A final and 10-5 in the B final at last week’s Thompson-Okanagan play down in Oliver was the Salmon Arm-Kamloops-Royal City tandem of skip Lorelei Guidos, third Catera Park, second Haylie Farquhar and lead Maya Belway.

Teams will be vying for provincial bragging rights as well as berths to the national championships. This year, the top-two finishers in junior men’s, and provincial jr. women’s champion, will all advance to the New Holland Canadian Junior Curling championships Jan. 18 to 26 in Langley.
