University campus at the core of the community

For over 50 years, Simon Fraser University has offered summer camps that introduce university life to children and youth. “We really want to show people that learning can be fun,” said Jason Stockley, the Manager of SFU Summer Camps. While SFU Camps appeal to just about everyone, Stockley said they are the perfect introduction to higher education.

“We really want to encourage these campers to become university students, to aspire and to dream and to push themselves, whether it’s educationally or athletically,” Stockley said.

Situated on SFU’s beautiful Burnaby Mountain campus, most of the camp staff are university students or recent graduates. Having these mentors, Stockley added, really fosters a learning and educational environment. With the diverse magnitude of campers who join each year, it is also the perfect place to explore the local community with youth from around the Lower Mainland, and to get exposed to other cultures beyond our borders. Camps range from athletics to educational and provide young learners with the chance to meet campers from around the world. After all, SFU has one of the most demographically diverse campuses in the area, which is one of the reasons it draws so many students from every corner of the globe.

As the SFU summer camp program has grown over the decades, so too has the number of younger campers. “Our university campus is an expanding community so we have campers as young as four years old” Stockley said, adding that “the sooner a child is introduced and socialized to the global world and international culture, the better.”

With an estimated 8,000 campers participating in SFU Summer Camps this year, it will no doubt be an exceptional opportunity for campers to meet new people, build relationships, and make friends from around the world.
