Port Moody is looking for everyday super heroes for its annual civic awards.

Port Moody is looking for some heroes. And they don’t have to fly or even wear a cape.

The city is inviting residents to nominate everyday heroes for its annual Civic Awards that will be announced next January.

Mayor Rob Vagramov said those heroes can be anyone from teachers to business owners to community volunteers, advocates for heritage, arts, culture and the environment, as well as sports coaches and athletes.

“Sometimes heroes are easily recognizable to everyone, but often they work quietly in the background, providing support and inspiration so that others can shine,” he said.

Nominations are open until July 31, and are being accepted in five categories:

• the Peter Hulbert Accessibility Award recognizes an individual, business, group, educator or government agency that works to remove barriers for individuals with disabilities.

• the Arts Award for an individual, business or organization that advances the artistic or cultural fabric of the Port Moody.

• the Environmental Award goes to an individual, organization or business that promotes environmental awareness and preservation.

• the Heritage Award recognizes the advancement of heritage conservation in the city by an individual, organization or business.

• the Sports Award is a recognition for local athletes, teams or builders — like coaches, officials or volunteers — who serve as positive role models and encourage young people to get involved in sports and lead healthy lifestyles. For the first time this year, there will be three recipients, one of whom will be a young person between the ages of 12 and 19.
