Business is booming at Cap's Bicycle Shop in Sapperton - and that's good news for owner and cycling enthusiast Gord Hobbis. It's also good for the community as Hobbis has given back to the community during the pandemic.

Cap’s Bicycles is using a boom in bike sales to help support its neighbours.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a surge of interest in cycling in cities across the world – resulting in a spike in bikes sales for many retailers, including Cap’s. With everyone in the shop working harder than ever, Cap’s Bicycles has been providing lunch every day for its staff and has been serving up a dinner every Saturday night – food purchased from local restaurants including Gino’s and Sapperton Tap House.

In recognition of the fact that its business is busier than normal at a time when others are suffering, Cap’s owner Gord Hobbis has also made donations to local programs and organizations. This includes giving $1,000 to Leona Green to help her with her Soups for Seniors program and $1,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Auxiliary to help with rent at its New to You Thrift Store, which reopened in June after being closed by COVID-19 restrictions.

Hobbis is only too happy to help pay it forward and help out his neighbours, who are working to help others that are helping the community in a time of need.

“The sign says ‘we are all in this together’. We are all experiencing different things. If I am – I am going to have to use the word fortunate – fortunate enough that it turned out to be an increase in business for me, then it’s on me to share,” Hobbis said. “The staff takes a bit of pride in that too. They like to know that they are contributing to the greater good, as well.”
