Dear Editor,

Can we please talk about how dangerous the intersection is at No. 2 Road and Westminster Highway?

I live and work in this area, and I fear for my life every time I have to pass through this intersection (which is every day, multiple times a day). I don’t own a car so I walk, take public transit and ride my bicycle.

This intersection is known by many to be one of the most dangerous intersections in all of Richmond.

Drivers are always rushing to go to the airport/Vancouver, and they frequently force their left turns even when they know they no longer have the right of way.

An accident occurs here every couple of months. And they’re never minor accidents. Cars are damaged to the point where they need to be written off.

Just yesterday (Dec. 4), I was walking to work and had almost reached the intersection when I heard a loud crash. I looked up and saw that two cars had collided in the intersection and one of them was now coming straight towards me. I managed to get out of the way in the nick of time, as the car jumped both the pedestrian refuge island and the sidewalk where I was just standing, and crashed into the trees behind me.

Luckily, both drivers were okay, and the one who crashed into the trees was taken away with minor injuries.

The high number of accidents at this intersection is a known issue that has been happening for some time.

What is it going to take for the city to do something about this intersection?

Are they waiting for someone to die in order to take action?

It shouldn’t have to come to that. Please, if you drive in this area, drive with caution.

Obey the traffic lights. Wait until it is safe to make your left turn. And, please, watch out for pedestrians.

We are here. We are walking. We don’t have a steel box around us to protect us.

We are just flesh and bone.
