Memories can drift and sway, but this filmmaker will showcase a commemoration play close to home.
Linda Ohama, a Canadian filmmaker, brings a reflective performance to the Murakami Boathouse in Steveston village in memory of her grandfather this weekend
Ohama’s show reflects on the dreams and life of her grandfather, Otokichi Murakami, as well as other Japanese-Canadian fishermen who relocated during the Second World War.
“It is my way of saying ‘sorry for not understanding more or celebrating his passion or for cleansing the spirit of his boathouse,’” Ohama told The Bulletin in an interview.
According to The Bulletin, she chose to have the play in early August during the traditional Obon Matsuri Festival.
Buddhists believes Obon is when the spirit of ancestors return home from the “other side” for three days while everyone celebrates with lots of food and prayers.
Attendees can choose from the available show times this weekend:
- Saturday, Aug. 17 – 2 p.m.
- Saturday, Aug. 17 – 6:30 p.m. (Sold Out)
- Sunday, Aug. 18 – 2 p.m.
- Sunday, Aug. 18 – 6:30 p.m.
The show will be held at the Murakami Boathouse at the Britannia Heritage Shipyards in Steveston.
