Teresa Wat, MLA.

Our province’s doctors, nurses, paramedics and health care professionals are battling to save lives in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not a day goes by without hearing heroic stories from the front lines in our community of care. Like these professionals, British Columbians need to come together to rise to the challenges we are all experiencing from the COVID-19 pandemic. These are challenges faced by our healthcare system, our communities, our businesses and our economy.

As British Columbians, we have a responsibility to protect those most vulnerable to this virus—those with compromised immunity and the seniors in our community.

Each one of us has a civic responsibility to listen to our healthcare experts and continue social distancing to minimize the strain on the healthcare system. This is important so our hospitals and healthcare services can continue to provide care for those who need it. All of us must do our part to limit the transmission of COVID-19 by practicing physical distancing.

This means staying at home, washing our hands frequently, limiting contact with public places, staying at least two metres away and avoiding physical contact with others whenever possible.

We also have a social responsibility to each other during these times to check in with our social networks and maintain contact with those close to us. It is important that we are aware of the anxiety and isolation that the next few weeks could bring to some people. This is why I am calling on everyone to do their part in creating safer and happier communities during this difficult time.
