LETTER: There’s no such thing as ‘free’ childcare

Dear editor:

Re: City Floats Free Child Care for Meetings, Oct. 9 news story.

The headline for this article is at best confusing and at worst misleading.

It states that the city will provide free child care at meetings, yet, towards the end of the article it states that the cost for the “free” child care is estimated at $15,300.

How could something cost anything if it is free? Perhaps a more accurate headline would be, City Chooses to Have Taxpayers Pay for Child Care at Meetings.

Unless the child-care providers and the administrators hiring and organizing the service are volunteering their time, and the equipment and toys necessary are being donated, the child care is not free.
