New use coming for Tsawwassen auto repair shop

A local business plans to relocate into space once occupied by an auto service shop in Tsawwassen.

The owner of Acorn Service Group, which installs and services residential and commercial heating, ventilation, cooling and plumbing systems, purchased the property at 5646-12th Ave., near the corner of 56th Street, with the intention of moving the company office from its Boundary Bay location.

The site would need to be rezoned from automobile servicing to commercial. Delta council granted preliminary approval for the application last week and will forward it to a public hearing

A staff report notes full redevelopment of the site is not being proposed at this time, so the owner has asked for the rezoning to proceed without a full site investigation and remediation. If the site is eventually redeveloped, the owner would have to meet the Ministry of Environment’s requirements for contaminated sites, given the historical use of the property as an auto shop and the presence of underground fuel storage tanks.

Now closed, the building had been a repair shop run by Robert Sands. In March 2015, he had taken over South Delta Motors, which had been in business for over 30 years, and changed the name to Sands & Sons Automotive.
