Students from Seaquam Secondary Robotics Teams grabbed a number of the top awards at their own hosted competition last Saturday in North Delta.

The competition at the school featured 57 teams from across the province.

Teams held on-going short battles throughout the day. The finals involved the highest placing robot teams during the preliminaries and required teams to partner with two other school teams (often mixed schools/districts) to compete together against another set of robots.

The event was organized by program coordinator Lanz Singbeil.

“Our Grade 12's Rohan Birk, Daniel Ruttan, Ripdaman Malhans, Joshan Gill, and Amit Sharma won tournament champion and the design awards,” said Singbeil. “Julian Pietraroia, Reade Legal, Ryan Bolton and Aiden Hong from 9181W won the second place spot and the Think award. Anisha Sharma, Chester Chung, and Martin Tang from 9181S received the Amaze award. In addition to our competing teams, this was truly a community effort with parents helping to run our concession stand to raise money for our program and more than 20 student volunteers who worked behind the scenes to set up and run the event.”

Delta Mayor George Harvie was on hand in the afternoon where he mingled and chatted with the competition participants.

He also thanked the school and offered congratulations during Monday’s council meeting in North Delta.

Singbeil said this weekend the senior team will be competing internationally at the Google Signature Event in Silicon Valley, Calif.

“We expect to send at least three of our teams to the world competition in April,” he said. “We are currently looking for help with funding our program. Robotics at Seaquam is open to all students and is a great opportunity for students to learn design, computer programming, electronics, and manufacturing skills.”
