Taoist tai chi is a set of gentle movements for people of all ages to improve health and balance. Beginning classes are held in Tsawwassen on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon at St. David’s Anglican Church and in Ladner on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ladner United Church.

The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is holding a Christmas dinner and fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. at Beach Grove Golf Club. Tickets for the buffet dinner are $75. A silent auction will be held to support the organization’s dedication to saving lives at sea. For tickets call John or Mary Horton at 604-943-4399.

 

Parkinson’s support group meeting will be held on Monday, Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at KinVillage in Tsawwassen. The group is for people living with Parkinson's and/or the people who care for them. For more information, call Gloria at 604-948-0156.

 

All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free monthly community meal at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

 

Want to practice your Spanish conversation? Intermediate level Spanish conversation meetings take place in the Tsawwassen Library every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. Next date is Dec. 17. They are not classes and are not suitable for beginners. For more information call or text Aidan at 360-350-9155

South Delta Newcomers would like to wish the blessings of Christmas on all members. Celebrate-a-Life tribute card event at Delta Hospice’s Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner is an opportunity to honour those who are important to you whether they have passed, or are in your minds and hearts during difficult times. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Do you enjoy knitting or crochet? Would you like to get together with like-minded people to share ideas, techniques and good conversation? Knit & Stitch is offered at all three Delta libraries. It runs Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library, Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Tsawwassen Library and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. at George Mackie Library. All ages and abilities are welcome.

 

The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is interviewing potential volunteers to serve as crew or support personnel for its Delta Lifeboat. Professional training is given in seamanship, navigation, medical, and search and rescue techniques. Contact John at 604-760-5218 for more information.

 

Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Peer facilitators lead the group, provide support and educate on topics that help members to cope and move forward in an encouraging way. Group meets twice a month on Thursdays in the Ladner office. Have you attended a suicide bereavement support group and want to connect with others with similar experiences on an ongoing or occasional basis? Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s drop-in, free Suicide Bereavement Alumni Group. Open to all communities. No commitment to attend every month. Christmas Variety Show at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13. Get warmed into the season with music, dance and singalong. Admission by food or cash for the food bank.

Shari’s Saturday Social Dance is on Jan. 11at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. Doors open at 7 p.m., dancing from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The theme is Canadian country casual. Dress style optional. Bingo anyone? KinVillage Community Centre hosts the longest running and richest bingo in Tsawwassen. Play 11 games, including Bonanza, for only $7.50 every Wednesday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Before you play you can enjoy great food at reasonable prices in the on-site Buenos Dias Café.

 

A mix of gentle chair yoga, meditation and stretch is offered from 11 to 11:45 a.m. on Thursdays at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. $5 for members or $6 for non-members per class or purchase a 10 punch card for $40 or $60.

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre needs new members for its carpet bowling club that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is only 50 cents.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

 

Former Olympic swimmer Elaine Tanner-Watt, who now lives in Tsawwassen with her husband John, will be spreading some Christmas cheer in the community. She will be signing free copies of her book Monkey Guy and The Cosmic Fairy on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Springs Golf Club main lobby. All are welcome.

 

ARTS

 

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. Especially needed now are trumpets and clarinets, or any instrument except alto sax (that section is full). Contact cjband7@gmail.com.

 

Loades of Music daytime concert band has commenced a new season. Band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
