Langara College, one of "Vancouver's best-kept secrets," is celebrating a very special anniversary on Saturday, June 15th.

Community Day presented by RBC Royal Bank is going to be held at the main campus on West 49th Avenue and is the perfect event to kick off a beautiful Vancouver summer. Starting at 11 am on June 15th and wrapping up at 5 pm, the day promises to be packed full of community members and happy Langarans of past, present, and future. Everyone is encouraged to visit the website and RSVP to the event and get the chance to win a holiday weekend in Victoria, including hotel, transportation, and more.

This year marks the 49th year that the college has been offering courses at its campus on 49th avenue. To mark this special occasion, Moira Gookstetter, the Executive Director of the Langara College Foundation, says that Langara College is inviting the entire community to take part in the special day of celebrations.

Local Canadian rock legends 54-40 will headline the free all-ages concert, supported by a range of musical acts including Desirée Dawson, The Big Coast, and Zulu Panda. A second, intercultural stage, will feature family-friendly programming, including Rockin’ Robin, a bhangra dance troupe, and a mariachi band. Attendees are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen, and picnic blankets for the festivities. Food trucks bearing all manner of enticing treats will be on hand, and there will be events for kids, a speaker series, alumni homecoming reunions, and over 70 activities – from carnival games to wood carving demos to free yoga - throughout the day.

The unique relationship between the Musqueam, on whose unceded territory the campus sits, and Langara College will be showcased with a variety of activities. In 2016, the Musqueam gifted the college a traditional name meaning ‘House of Learning’. Attendees can enjoy a traditional welcome, visit the College’s Indigenous Gathering Space, watch a wood carving demonstration, or try their hand at cedar bracelet making.

"I think in today's world, we're so busy going from one thing to the next, we can forget to celebrate landmarks," says Gookstetter. "Langara has been such a cornerstone for 49 years, we are a hidden jewel. To be able to showcase that, and to reconnect with those who have passed through our doors, is just so meaningful for us."
