What happened to Zoom Zoom scooters?

For the past few years, a fleet of red and white scooters signalled the beginning of tourist season. The two-wheeled harbingers of ferry overloads travelled to the far reaches of Tunstall Bay, Cowan Point and Mt. Gardner. But the roads were quiet this past May.

After co-owner Jamie Woodall found out over the winter that Zoom Zoom Scooter Rentals would need to move from its Miller Road location, she searched the cove for a suitable site. But flat training areas that meet zoning requirements are hard to come by in the cove.

“It needs to be paved, and it needs to be designated for it to be safe,” said Woodall.

“[And] if I can’t train them to be safe riders first and I can’t assess their strength as riders, I can’t send them out into this community,” she said.

After considering and then deciding against renting e-bikes, Woodall didn’t open Zoom Zoom this year.

However, one might still see a flash of red and white on Bowen roads. Woodall kept four scooters insured and on occasion rents to people with a class six motorcycle licence (so there’s no training required). She also is also honouring pre-paid purchases: people who bought scooter rentals as an auction item, or who received a gift certificate.

As for the future of Zoom Zoom, Woodall isn’t sure, but she’s holding onto the scooters for now.
