Saying goodbye to a loved one is never an easy thing to do.

But with the assistance of an experienced and compassionate team from First Memorial Funeral Services in Port Coquitlam, the process can be eased.

To begin, First Memorial is able to accommodate any wish for the type of ceremony or event their clients wish to hold.

“That can be from cremation only, to a fully-fledged church service,” says Brett Ray, manager with First Memorial Funeral Services.

Any religious denomination is welcomed, and staff work closely with those officials to ensure all needs and requirements are met.

The character of a service can also be customized to meet a client or family’s wishes.

“One of the things we are excited about within our company is something we call ‘A Life Well Celebrated,’” Ray says. “That’s basically full personalization of any service customers want.”

A playful example recently was a service for a keen golfer whose guests at their service were each handed a golf ball as they entered with the person’s name and personal message printed on them.

“It appears, people are open toward a celebration of life because it opens up the doors for more personalization and that’s what we are able to assist in - to bring the personality of the individual to the guests,” Ray explains.

“And what better way to do that than fill up the room with things that remind them of their loved one.”

Clients can also help reduce the anxiety around organizing a funeral service by planning ahead.

“When you lose a loved one, it’s understandably a fragile time,” Ray says.

By pre-planning a service or celebration, the majority of the decisions are made in advance by the family with one of their family service counsellors, leaving only small details, such as dates and times, etc., to be decided upon at the time of need with a funeral director.

“It allows us to do what we really take pride in, which is to let the family have peace of mind knowing that the wishes of their loved ones are in place, and to spend time with them. When we are needed, we will be there to take care of everything that needs to be done.”

Pre-planning can also help reduce possible financial burden.

“Planning ahead locks clients into today’s price, something they can pay for monthly over a period of five, to say 15 years,” Ray says.
