The move comes only hours after bus drivers and technicians agreed to a new contract

About 900 SkyTrain workers issued a 72-hour strike notice on Friday after negotiations with the employer, the British Columbia Rapid Transit Company, failed to make significant headway after 40 days of bargaining.

The announcement by CUPE 7000, the union representing workers, comes within hours of bus drivers and technicians announcing a vote to approve a new three-year contract with the Coast Mountain Bus Company, another key employer in Metro Vancouver’s transit system.

Just shy of 98% of union workers voted in favour of issuing the strike notice, a group that includes SkyTrain attendants, control operators and staff with technical, administrative and maintenance duties.

Both sides remain at the bargaining table, according to the union.

In a press release, president of the BC Rapid Transit Company said the union has not told the company what the job action would look like nor when it might happen.
