The Surrey Eagles may be more than 30 points behind the Coquitlam Express in the BC Hockey League standings, but they did enough Wednesday to defeat the league’s regular season champions, 3-1, in its final home game at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex before the playoffs.

The Eagles got a pair of goals by Carter King — one of them into an empty net with 11 seconds remaining in the third period — and another from Wyatt Schlatt, to hand the Express only its ninth loss of the season.

Steve Bellini scored the only goal for Coquitlam, which outshot the visitors 30-25.

The Express closes out its regular season schedule in Prince George this weekend with a pair of games against the Spruce Kings. The team plays the Langley Rivermen in the opening round of the playoffs. That best-of-seven series begins Feb. 28, 7 p.m., at Poirier.
