Recognizing the strength of inclusive communities during Community Inclusion Month.

How can you be more inclusive your community? Every year at this time, the Community Ventures Society (CVS) celebrates the gifts and contributions that people with developmental disabilities make in the Tri-Cities communities.

How can you be more inclusive your community? Every year at this time, the Community Ventures Society (CVS) celebrates the gifts and contributions that people with developmental disabilities make in the Tri-Cities communities.

“At CVS, our vision is inclusive communities where people belong and have opportunities to contribute,” says Kevin Lusignan, Executive Director of Community Ventures Society.

Individuals with disabilities are valuable members of our communities in so many ways, contributing to our economy, leisure activities and so much more. CVS is celebrating a milestone year, having opened its doors in May 1978 in the Tri-Cities. Since that time, we have seen considerable growth in community inclusion efforts and are proud to be part of this continued shift in accessibility, attitudes and openness to individuals with diverse abilities.

One great example of the power of community inclusion is in employment. The Employment Roundtable of the Tri-Cities awarded the Inclusive Employer Award to the Boathouse Restaurant in Port Moody at the Mayor’s BBQ on September 6, 2018. We acknowledge their leadership and work on diversity and inclusive employment. We very much appreciate the efforts of the Boathouse Restaurant in Port Moody and all employers who make the point of promoting community inclusion in their workplace.

October is Community Inclusion Month and this is CVS’ 40th year of connecting the individuals we serve to the community. It’s a month where we promote what community inclusion is and why it is so important to our society as a whole. Community Ventures Society invites you to join us in celebrating Community Inclusion Month and asks that you think about how you can help people with disabilities be more included in our schools, places of play, in the arts, in workplaces and at the ballot box.
