Where Art Meets Nature is the theme for the third annual Art in the Park at Coquitlam's Minnekhada regional park this weekend.

About 30 artists will show and sell their wares during the festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Photographer Manfred Kraus, a director of the Minnekhada Park Association, said children's artwork from a recent Creative Cafe, held at the park, will be on display showing the diverse flora and fauna at the Metro Vancouver-run green jewel.

As well, the free family event will feature Mojiganga, a giant puppet bear created by artist Ana Martin Del Campo, and a walking performer dressed as a blue tree - a nod to Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos' Blue Trees outside of Port Moody city hall in March.

In addition to art displays, demonstrations and a barbecue lunch, visitors can learn more about local First Nations and the French voyageurs and listen to the blues/jazz sounds of The Oscar Hicks Sextet, led by Craig Townsend, "who are now a tradition with the Art in the Park," association director Roger Loubert said.

The two-day festival, which received a $7,900 grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage earlier this year, gives the public a chance "to come out and see local artists, hear some great music and walk around the old lodge and woods for a bit," Krause said.

Admission is free and visitors can catch a free shuttle at the Quarry Road parking lot. To get there from Lougheed Highway in Port Coquitlam, turn north onto Coast Meridian Road, travel 2.5 km and turn right on Victoria Drive; keep left on Victoria to Quarry Road.
