If you could envision the perfect school campus for your child, what would be on your checklist? Modern, inclusive facilities? State-of-the-art science and computer labs? Imaginative outdoor areas? A forward-looking private school in New Westminster is building all of the above and more to help students realize their potential.

Parents looking for a Junior Kindergarten (JK) to Grade 12 private school that delivers meaningful experiences in an engaging and modern environment might want to circle Fall 2018 in their calendar. That’s when Urban Academy opens the doors of its dynamic new campus in New Westminster.

It is an exciting new chapter in the already compelling story of a school that has wasted no time providing parents in the Lower Mainland—particularly Burnaby, New Westminster, and the Tri-Cities—with another choice when searching for a private school.

A private school with a difference

Founded in 2001 with a mission to prepare students for a rapidly changing future, Urban Academy is not a ‘staunchly traditional’ school. For many parents, that’s a major plus, the evidence for which can be found in the school’s rapid growth from 10 Kindergarten/Grade 1 students in 2001 to 180 JK to Grade 12 students today.

With a goal to provide a community-involved school option in New Westminster, Urban Academy got its start. The plan was, and continues to be, simple: develop an environment that connects classroom learning to real life, that allows teachers to be at their best while creating a school that includes parents as partners.

Mindful of the changing world in which we live, the educational approach is to expose students to real world challenges. By allowing them to apply their newly acquired classroom skills to real world examples, they learn early to answer the age-old adage of: why must I learn this? Urban Academy seeks to prepare students to think on their feet, draw on a vast number of experiences with confidence and develop the leadership skills necessary to become the creative innovators of tomorrow.

This ambitious thinking is also reflected in Urban Academy’s new campus, which might just challenge your perception of what a school should look like, and how it should feel.

Opportunity knocks for young minds

The countdown to JK and Kindergarten enrollment for Fall 2018 has already started. If you are one of the many parents who are still working through their checklist of what to look for in a school, here’s a quick tour of what Urban Academy offers you and, more importantly, your child.

Numbers that add up for discerning parents

The reimagined campus, handily located for road and transit access, raises the bar for private school facilities, while enhancing Urban Academy’s growing reputation for combining academic learning with real-life skills building.

·      4,000+ sq ft gymnasium

·      Seven custom-design and built outdoor areas for play, study, and leisure

·      Five storeys of Grade-specific and multi-purpose learning spaces

·      15 minutes by car from Burnaby, Surrey, and the Tri-Cities

·      Average maximum class sizes of 16 to 18 students

Built for enquiring minds

The school’s new classrooms have been planned with flexibility in mind to create engaging and diverse learning spaces, and all rooms are wired for the latest technologies. Even the library combines the traditional library space with a technology lab to create an innovative environment that fuses old ideas with new thinking. There are also fully equipped science labs. If you want to see the future of learning, this is it.

Space to grow

Urban Academy is doing its level best to create a place where students feel they can do things they enjoy, and explore new and diverse interests. That includes a full-size gymnasium, music areas, art rooms, and a performance space and theatre that can host 150 people. Topping it all off is a rooftop patio for older students to create gardens and work on science projects.

Designed for all ages

The new campus acknowledges the different needs of the various age groups. There are designated learning spaces for Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Intermediate, Middle School, and Secondary school students. However, there are also flexible learning spaces everyone can enjoy, including a large multi-purpose area and kitchen that’s open to all. It feels like a community as well as a school.

Can you imagine a place your children will actually look forward to going to every day? Urban Academy didn’t just imagine it; they’re building it.
