“Squat…lower,” says Raquel Barria to a die-hard group of senior fitness enthusiasts at Gates Park in Port Coquitlam Monday morning.

The 15 ladies were among those taking advantage of the city’s $5 a class outdoor initiative as it strives to bring back activities during Phase 3 of the province’s COVID-19 restart plan.

To a classic Abba tune, the ladies swung their hips, arms and legs to the beat while keeping a safe distance.

Barria also led off the class with a number of announcements, including the fact that only 15 participants would be allowed in the class, and no drop-ins would be permitted.

There are only three types of classes currently offered, the seniors program at Gates Park Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m., a boot camp offered Tuesdays at Aggie Park at 7 p.m. and HIIT offered Thursdays at Aggie.

Registration will begin at midnight each Wednesday for classes held the following week and may be booked one week at a time on a first-come, first-served basis.

Register online at portcoquitlam.ca/register or by phone Wednesday 9-11 a.m. at 604-927-PLAY (7529).

Classes will be held rain or shine.
