Richmond Mounties say a man they arrested earlier this month was found carrying an “AR-15 style assault rifle.”

During a routine, targeted patrol in Richmond city centre, police came across a man who was known to have two outstanding warrants, according to RCMP.

While officers arrested the man “without incident,” they found an AR-15 style assault rifle during a subsequent search of his belongings.

James Bonney was held in custody and has been charged with seven counts, including possessing a prohibited weapon, device or ammunition without a license and using, carrying or handling a firearm or prohibited weapon in a careless manner.

“We are committed to keeping the public safe in Richmond which is why we are out there doing targeted enforcement,” said Sgt. Simon Lee, of Richmond RCMP’s targeted enforcement units.

“In this case, it allowed us to get a firearm off the street. Any day we are able to do that is a great day.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information, is asked to contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2020-25115.
