Homebuilders Association Vancouver members raise $10,800 in annual Coats for Kids drive

HAVAN also creates mountain of coats, warm clothes and toys donated at 72 drop-off locations

Homebuilders Association Vancouver (HAVAN) celebrated the wrap-up of its 24th annual Coats for Kids campaign, in support of the Lower Mainland and Surrey Christmas Bureaus, with the presentation of $10,800 in cash donations December 6.

HAVAN also created a mountain of new and gently used coats, scarves, gloves, blankets and new unwrapped toys and gifts for children, with member companies providing 72 drop-off locations across 16 Metro Vancouver municipalities throughout November.

Participating companies gathered to build and present the mountain of coats to the Lower Mainland and Surrey Christmas Bureaus on Friday, December 6 at Santa's Workshop (aka Trail Appliances in Surrey).

This year’s $10,800 in cash donations was more than double that of last year. Accepting the cheque, Lisa Werring, executive director of the Surrey Christmas Bureau, said the donation was crucial in helping cover food costs for families over the holiday season, noting the many refugee families who will benefit from the contributions.

More than 150 people joined in the celebration – including the Grinch, Cindy Loo and Max too! The Partita Choir and Vancouver Bach Family of Choirs arrived on Santa’s Sleigh (provided by Wesgroup Equipment) to sing by the Christmas tree. Members and guests who dropped off donations enjoyed Buddy’s Hot Breakfast Bar, sponsored by Tradesmen International and Falcon Homes; the Gingerbread Man’s Cookie Decoration Station, sponsored by TQ Construction in partnership with Snow Cap; a Customizable Hot Chocolate Bar, sponsored by Designs by KS; and photos with Santa in the Sub Zero room, compliments of Miracon Development.

According to HAVAN, it is not too late to donate, as the bureaus are still looking for presents for teens. Gift cards to Surrey Guildford Mall, movie tickets, etc. are a couple of great ideas. Donations can be dropped off directly to either of the following locations:

• Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, 3rd floor, 1870 Pandora Street, Vancouver, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Please email office@lmcb.ca or call 604.253.7191 to arrange a confirmed drop-off time prior to delivery.

• Surrey Christmas Bureau, 10240 City Parkway, Surrey, open Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Please email coordinator@christmasbureau.com or call 604.581.9623 to arrange a confirmed drop-off time prior to delivery.
