Musqueam: Neighbourhood numbers

1808 — The year fur trader Simon Fraser was turned back at the mouth of the Fraser River by Musqueam warriors. 1976 — The year of the Musqueam Declaration, which asserted the band's independence as a first nation and its rights to land and resources.

1952 — The year Susan A. Point was born in Alert Bay. She has lived on the Musqueam reserve virtually all her life and is the band's best known artist. Her work can be seen at the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver airport.
 
1984 — The year the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the federal government must protect the interests of aboriginal people in Canada. The ruling was more commonly known as the Guerin case. The court also recognized that aboriginal rights existed before Canada became a country.

1 — The number of former National Hockey League tough guys who used to live on the Musqueam reserve. His name is Gino Odjick, a member of the Ojibway first nation, who played for the Vancouver Canucks in the 1990s.
