Vancouver police are hoping the public can help identify the man who broke into the Harbour Air terminal Friday and stole a seaplane.

Officers were called to the terminal at about 3:30 a.m. Friday for a report of a float plane crashing into another plane.

Investigators believe that the suspect broke into the facility and then broke into one of the seaplanes. He managed to start the plane and attempted to take off. However, he was unsuccessful and crashed the plane into others.

A statement from Harbour Air Seaplanes Friday said someone tried to steal a Seair aircraft at the Coal Harbour floatplane terminal and during that incident two other Harbour Air planes were damaged.

“This is a very unique scenario and one our members don’t see every day,” Const. Tania Visintin, a media relations officer. “This was a very dangerous situation and we are thankful that no one was injured.”

Visintin said investigators have not yet been able to determine a motive but "there is no evidence to suggest it was an act of terrorism."

The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s. He is believed to be about 5’10” tall with an average build. He has short brown hair with a slightly receding hairline. He is clean-shaven and has a pronounced brow ridge. The suspect was wearing a red long-sleeved zip-up sweater, dark pants and dress shoes.

Vancouver police Wednesday released three surveillance video clips of the suspect.

Investigators believe the suspect has a working knowledge of planes and are urging members of the aviation community and the public to contact police if they recognize the man.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 604-717-0610 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
