The Richmond Sockeyes will play their one and only PJHL pre-season home game Thursday night when the White Rock Whalers visit Minoru Arenas at 7 p.m.

Hockey fans can get a sneak peak of this year’s edition of the Richmond Sockeyes when they host the White Rock Whalers on Thursday night in their one and only home pre-season game.

Puck drops at 7 p.m. at Minoru Arenas with a special $5 admission for adults while kids are free. The same two teams will meet on Saturday afternoon at Centennial Arena in White Rock in what will be Richmond’s final tune-up prior to Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season.

Head coach Brett Reusch and his staff will have some tough roster decisions to make prior to the Sockeyes’ league opener on Sept. 5 when the same Whalers are back at Minoru.

The Sockeyes will also be waiting to see what happens with B.C. Hockey League rosters with a number of players currently attending camps.

The Sockeyes are coming off a 30-10-2 season that ended with a quarter-final playoff loss to the Grandview Steelers.

Local product and last year’s captain Matthew Brown is the latest Sockeyes grad to take his career to Simon Fraser University.

The 6-foot-3 blueliner played four seasons for his hometown team, earning a reputation for his all-round defensive game. Brown also played in 47 games in the BCHL with the Surrey Eagles.

He will be studying criminology at the Burnaby Mountain campus.

Brown won’t have to look far to find some familiar faces with Jake Keremidschieff earlier committing to SFU. They will be reunited with forward Arjun Badh who is entering his sophomore season.

All three helped Richmond capture the Cyclone Taylor Cup in 2018.
