McMath takes on Courtenay's Mark Isfeld with favourable path to Friday's semi-finals

Hope Chan and the McMath Wildcats open play at the BC 3A Championships on Wednesday against Mark Isfeld. The 16-team tournament wraps up on Saturday.

It’s a favourable path to a final four appearance at the inaugural BC 3A Girls Basketball Championships and the McMath Wildcats just need to play to their potential to get there.

The Steveston school is seeded No. 3 for the 16-team tournament that tips-off tomorrow at the Langley Events Centre. The Wildcats will take on No. 14 Mark Isfeld from Courtenay at 4:45 p.m. with a win sending them to the quarter-final round on Thursday (2:15 p.m.) against the winner of (No. 6) MEI and (No. 11) Vernon.

“That’s been the goal all along. Get to the semi-finals and see what happens. That would be phenomenal given how young this team is,” said McMath co-coach Chris Kennedy. “The top two seeds are little bit better than everybody else and that’s Okanagan Mission (No. 2) and Abbotsford.

“We avoided (a potential quarter-final game with No. 4) Argyle who I think are in our heads a little bit because of what has happened the last couple of years (at the former Lower Mainland playoffs). “Isfeld is a good match-up for us and MEI would be a good draw as well. I was also pleased to see where some of the other (dangerous) lower seeds fell like (No. 8) GW Graham. They all seemed to be away from us which is nice.”

The Wildcats’ greatest concern is just how easy they won the Richmond and South Fraser playoff tournaments. They haven’t really been tested in about a month and it led to a scrimmage against BC 2A tournament bound York House last week.

“It does make me nervous because some of those other zones were competitive like the Okanagan and Fraser Valley,” admitted Kennedy. “Hopefully we are tested on day one and come into day two on a roll.”
