The union representing SkyTrain workers has issued a 72-hour strike notice. Canada Line will not be affected.

TransLink is warning transit users that there might be more bus riders and more congestion if an anticipated strike hits SkyTrain on Tuesday morning.

SkyTrain workers are threatening a three-day shutdown from Dec. 10 to 12 if an agreement isn’t reached with their employer BC Rapid Transit Company (BCTRC).

If the strike moves forward, there will be a system-wide shutdown of Expo and Millennium lines, starting Tuesday at 5 a.m. and continuing to Friday morning.

TransLink highlights that other transit services such as Canada Line, West Coast Express, Seabus, Coast Mountain buses, West Vancouver Blue buses and HandyDART will operate normally.

Michael McDaniel, president of Coast Mountain Bus Company (CMBC), said their “customers should be aware that given (their) operational constraints and labour considerations, (they) are not able to increase bus service in response to the planned strike by BCRTC employees on SkyTrain this week,” adding that bus services will be running as normal.

With heavy passenger traffic on other TransLink services, the public is encouraged to make other arrangements such as:

  • Using park and ride bus services
  • Travelling outside of rush hours
  • Working from home
  • Using a carpooling service like Liftango and gobyRIDE
  • Walking or cycling to work

“BCRTC remains committed to getting a deal done and will continue bargaining until the last moment to avoid disruptive job action for customers,” read a statement from TransLink.
