Sophie McDougall and Jean Garnett were special guests at the CFUW’s 100th anniversary AGM and banquet in Winnipeg on the weekend.

After receiving a BA in agriculture at UBC, McDougall went on to complete a Bachelor of Library Science at the University of Washington in Seattle.

During her career, McDougall worked as a librarian at Penn State, at the Seattle Public Library, the UBC Medical Library and at Vancouver Public Library.

In 1967, she and a small group of other Richmond women came together to form the University Women’s Club of Richmond which, in turn, established the Friends of the Library in Richmond.

Garnett has been a member of CFUW Richmond since 1990 and has served as president, Ways and Means chair, program chair and treasurer.

Garnett produces her club's monthly newsletter and calendar and publishes the membership directory.

Within the community, she coordinates the Third Age Learning at Kwantlen (TALK) program, which organizes courses for those over 50.

Garnett was previously active in the Richmond District Parent Association and the Richmond Arts Coalition.

CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization with over 100 clubs located in every province across Canada, working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace.
